Thoughts on the Olympics - Reflections of History

Are you a fan of the Olympics? The Opening Ceremony will be broadcast tonight (actually rebroadcast, since it started in real time at 5:00 am my time, but wasn't on anything I could watch live - GRRR). I'll be joining a lot of people watching the Ceremony tonight, because I love the Olympics. DH has been watching it since it started nightly broadcasts two or three days ago. Last night was rowing and it was pretty great. I've been searching through my Peacock options, but they're more limited than I had hoped. Yes, broadcasting has come a long way since the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria (the first Olympics I can remember watching), but I think broadcasting the Olympics still has a long way to go.

I barely remember the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck,
Austria, but watching those games was the beginning
of a lifelong obsession with watching both the Summer
and the Winter Olympics. I remember watching the
next winter games - 1968 in Grenoble - much better as
I watched Jean Claude Killy win three gold medals
on those slopes.

Today I start the morning out with a mammogram - oh joy. I really don't mind them, it's just putting the time aside to have them. I'm almost a year overdue on this one, and wanted to get it completed before I see my Doctor in a couple of weeks. I'm really hoping she can refer me for another bone scan. I'd LOVE to be able to drop my bone density pill from my medical regime. I'm not a fan of medications, and it's the only med I take, but I'd like to eliminate it from my regime completely.

I remember vividly the protest of the black athletes at
the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico. I was
involved in protests and was a member of several radical
groups at that time, and when I look back at it now, I'm
not sure we've actually managed to come very far with
true justice and equality. I'm afraid we might even be
backsliding - not a good thing at all.

Today I'll be catching up with everything I put off for Wednesday's tattoo appointment. Standard things like grocery shopping, housecleaning, laundry, etc were mostly postponed until today. I'm sure DH would love clean sheets on the bed and a clean robe for his mornings. I need to get some serious kitchen work done, and also need to get back out to the raspberry patch and harvest the last of this year's berries.

In 1996, the Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta,
Georgia, USA. It wasn't an Olympics without problems, but
one of the truly stellar moments was when Mohammed
Ali lit the Olympic Flame. Beautiful!

So it's going to be a busy day, and that's far from a bad thing. I do have bills to pay and a house to maintain and food to prepare and, and, and.... yeah. You get the idea. The work is never-ending, but time rolls on and somehow I have to try and keep ahead of it all. Yeah! Right! LOLOL.

I remember watching the 1984 Winter Olympics from
Sarajevo. My mother and I would talk on the phone
because she had fond memories of the location. Her
family had a vacation home in the area and would go there
every year. But here's the Olympic Stadium a few
years later - after their brutal civil war. It's now a cemetery,
and the Olympic complex has fallen into ruin. Here's
a link to a short drone film on YouTube if you're
interested in seeing more - the large building in the
video is the main hotel for Olympics guests.

Have a fantastic day, enjoy the Opening Ceremonies in your own time zone, and I'll be back tomorrow, hopefully with a house that's a little bit cleaner. I look forward to chatting again soon.
