Pow-Wow Season Is Back - We're Busy at the Shop

It was a busy weekend, the shop was hopping on Friday afternoon and on Saturday for several hours. It was nice to have some good sales for a change, although they were mostly one-time sales or old customers who were visiting from out of town. Pow-wow season is fully in stream now, and more than 60% of our customers have been Native American, buying a variety of items for their regalia.

Women's Northern Traditional dance outfits
are usually a full-length fully beaded
buckskin dress with fringe, an eagle feather
fan, fully beaded moccasins to match
the outfit, a bone and leather breastplate,
and other beaded items such as hair ties
and barettes. There's usually a belt
worn also, although you can't see one on
this outfit. These are NOT costumes, they
are outfits.

Have you ever attended or even heard of a pow-wow? DH and I used to attend quite often, although DH wasn't enamoured of them. I really enjoy them, I enjoy watching them, and I have danced in them occasionally. Pow-wow in the USA is generally a get-together of the "oyate" or "people" for socializing, eating, catching up on news and with friends, and most of all, dancing. There are various types of dancing that are usually done, but they vary by location in the nation and which tribe is hosting the dance. In the South, you'll find gourd-dancing a common style, although I rarely see it in the North. In the Plains, you'll get a lot of grass dancers, but they'll be less common in other areas of the country. There are always Traditional dancers - male and female, and the Jingle Dress dancers (female) is a category that has become extremely popular over the past 50 years.

Navajo Traditional dress is velvet - a long
sleeved shirt and a tiered skirt with a concho
necklace and belt, bracelets on each wrist
and rings and earrings. It's likely this
person has a matching barrette keeping her
hair back, and under her concho belt she
is wearing a woven sash that I associate more
with Hopi or Zuni than with Navajo. It's
a beautiful outfit, though.

When I dance, which is rarely, I dress in traditional Navajo velvet with my turquoise and silver belts, bracelets and necklaces. I dance traditional style, so not a lot of movement. My Unci (Grandmother) also gifted me with a buckskin dress for dancing. I've probably lost enough weight that I could wear it comfortably now. I enjoy dancing, and I enjoy catching up with friends and acquaintances at the Pow-wows, but it's not really DH's thing. He's not a very social person, and even though he's gone with Native American friends of ours, he's never been very comfortable at that setting.

Most of the tiny tots will want their own
outfits before they get too big, but the
really small ones are welcome to participate
in whatever clothing they happen to be wearing.
This Pow-wow took place near Salt
Lake City, Utah.

I think the best thing about any Pow-wow though are the little children. They love dancing to the drum, and they're always rewarded with candy or money when they take to the arena. They're absolutely adorable and just enjoy themselves so very much as they dance to the drum in whatever ways seem best to them.

Drum groups shift members often, but the good ones have
a core group that works together all the time. Here's a
Lakota drum at a Pow-wow from Rosebud, South Dakota
in 2017. My brother Floyd was a part of the Porcupine
Singers - a very well known and respected drum from
Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Kicking Woman is another
excellent Drum to look up. A lot of these drums will
have some songs on You Tube, so check it out if
you're interested in their sound.

The drums are central to Pow-wow. There are a variety of songs sung, and different beats made. Drums are used at Pow-wow, and also for funerals and other events. When my brother Floyd was honored and buried more than two years ago, the drum from Prairie Island came out to play and honor him. I can hear it in my mind as I write this, the singing and the cadenced beats of the drummers around the drum, never missing a beat in every honoring song. It's a magic of it's own.

Before you think Pow-wow is just women, the men are just
as involved and their dress is just as elaborate. Here is a
traditional Northern Plains dancer with porcupine roach
headdress, a fan in one hand and staff in the other, with a
full bustle in back and lots of excellent beadwork. Although
often the beading is done by the women, some of the best
beaders I've ever known have been men, and the Native
American men who have made their own dance outfits
are outstanding artists in their own right.

There are drums and songs for ceremonial use, and drums and songs for dancing. Big Pow-wows will often have several drums and the songs will move from one to the next throughout the day, sometimes over several days since the event will often take place over a two or three-day period. If you're interested in listening to some drums, try Porcupine Singers or Kicking Woman Singers on You Tube.

On that note, I'm out of here. Have an excellent Monday, I hope your week will start out well and I'll be back tomorrow. (BTW, the store alarm had another false alarm last night, so I'm back to 2 hours of sleep today. I'll be getting a tech out to check everything out today sometime.)

Dancing - Exercise and Joy

With perfect timing, my new leotard, tights and dance shoes arrived via Amazon yesterday at the shop. I've already pulled them into the laundry and they're drying on hangers right now. I found my weight-lifting gloves, so my hands won't slip off the barre like last week, and my new portable DVD player is charged up and working. I think I'm ready to tackle my Fluidity workout once again. It's my hope that I do a bit better with the exercises today than I did last week, having had some experience with the program and the equipment. If I do, then I can start working it into my morning routine 3-4 times a week which will make me very happy.

My old leotard was toast, so I ordered a new
short-sleeved leotard and tights similar to
this, but in a deep wine color. I also bought a
set of full soled dance shoes. That should let
me move freely during exercise, but not slip
on the mat. My weight lifting gloves of
old will keep my sweaty hands from slipping
on the barre.

My trip to see my podiatrist yesterday was very successful. I'm cleared to go for any activity, only ordered to pull back if I feel any pain. That includes pointing and flexing my foot in dance moves, so I'm very pleased. Again ... we'll see how I do in today's barre workout - LOL.

I'm absolutely relieved that the County Small Business Relief
Fund application was accepted and that we'll get funding
through it. I'll breathe a bit easier when the funds are in
my bank account.

On another front, also good news. My store has been awarded one of the County Small Business Relief Fund grants. It's for $10,000. I'll read through the documents carefully today and scan, e-sign, and submit the final bits they are asking for tonight, and then we'll be set. I'll breathe a bit of a sigh of relief once the funds are in my account. It's been really hard, opening again. I'm relieved that we're open and we are bringing in some customers, but our sales volumes are down more than 50% pre-COVID dollars and we can't survive on that for long. This grant will give us a bit more time and that's a true blessing.

On that note, I'm hungry. I'm going to go upstairs, make my morning oatmeal and tea, and start my day. Since DH harvested another pint of fresh raspberries yesterday, I might treat myself to some of the berries on my oatmeal. Heaven ... whoot!!!! Have a truly wonderful day, enjoy one thing to the maximum today, and be kind. I'll be back tomorrow.

The Doctor, The Verdict and The Shoes

So, the Doctor visit. He says I'm doing great! I'm quite happy. I had yet another set of x-rays, this time standing for all of them with my foot bent this way and that. It didn't hurt, and I was able to bear the weight, so I was pumped. After the doc took a look and talked with me, I'm moving up - instructions are:

* crutches can be put away. Done with them!
* I can start wearing an ankle brace (Ace bandage style or a Neoprene style waterproof one for swimming) beginning 15 minutes every hour or so, and moving time up from there.
* I have another appointment for yet another series of x-rays in mid-July.

The Ace Ankle Stabilizer brace is working well. I
wear my orthotic between my foot and the bottom of
the brace. I ordered something similar to this in
neoprene yesterday. It's made for the pool, and the
pool opens on the 22nd. I plan to be swimming
again within 10 days.

The swelling, although down, isn't totally reduced yet, and that's making things a bit more difficult for me. I talked about getting a set of lace-up boots, which the Dr thought was a great idea, but with my left foot still swollen, it's hard to get a proper fit. I might order some Dr Martens through Zappos and see if I get lucky. I've had my eyes on a pair. Otherwise, I'm going to have to find a shoe that features elastic on the top so I can accommodate the swelling along with a sock and the ankle brace.

Doing a quick search at Zappos, a set of Keds like these
might do well for me. It has that extra elastic on
the sides that will allow for my swollen foot and extra
socks. I might give it a try.

All things told, though, these are minor problems and I'm well on the way to recovery. So ... I'm pretty darned happy. Doc said I could take off the walking cast when I sleep, so last night was my first try. I ended up working a weird set-up with my orthotic, my Ace ankle brace and the compression bandage and tube sock from the walking cast. But that combo finally held things snugly so that I could walk and lie down without twinges of pain. I guess I'll be using the compression bandage and tube sock for a while longer - not a problem, but it makes standard shoes impossible.

I'm not quite up to dancing the tango yet (or ever,
truth be told), but I'm much better than six weeks
ago, so life is good! LOL

I'll figure things out. My shoes won't be a fashion statement, but if I'm comfortable wearing them and if they last for the summer, I'll be happy. I'm certainly NOT complaining right now. I'm not dancing, but I could ... maybe ... if I needed to - LOL. Have an excellent weekend and I'll be back Monday morning.

I Feel Like Dancing

I feel like dancing. I have an older body - overweight and prone to broken bones, my muscles are tired, and my mind is more prone to defy gravity than I am in real life. Nonetheless, I feel like dancing despite all of this.

I feel like dancing - well...why not? Joy can be expressed in so many
ways and dancing is one of them.

It's fall, my favorite season, and the leaves are turning into shades of red, orange and gold that are combining to make my favorite color combinations.

May I have this dance?

I have my new printer installed and even though there are still quirks I need to work out, it seems like it will work very well for me and it's fast, fast, fast!

Ballet comes in many varieties, not just classical any more. I love
the strength of this dancer's feet, even though mine would be screaming
in pain if I tried anything like this.

I had a fabulously fun time sharing lunch with drummerwench yesterday with great food and conversation that passed by all too soon.

Love this series of the body in motion.

I got all of my errands completed and had a fabulous phone conversation with Aearwen. My fruit and vegetables got washed and prepped, my chicken breasts got baked, and even the laundry got done despite my altered Wednesday schedule. I admit that the last load didn't get out of the dryer until shortly after 8:00 p.m., but that's OK. It all got cleaned, so I'm happy.

Of course dance isn't solely a women's activity. I've always loved
watching the men - they can be stunning and amazing and they defy gravity.

I got chocolate! Drummerwench was kind enough to gift me with two amazing San Francisco chocolates. There is "Pure Notes Dark Chocolate" by TCHO - very dark and rich, not overly sweet, very nice! Also, there is Recchiuti's "Dark Milk" Chocolate that I think has become my new favorite. It has just a touch of milk to give smoothness and is slightly sweeter than the TCHO. It's totally AMAZING!

Is life a leap of faith?

So, all of these good things - yup, I'll be dancing through the falling leaves today!

Want to dance with me? Let's defy gravity and fly...

Care to join me?
