Now ... on to Project Runway. Warning ... SPOILERS AHEAD.
The challenge, if you recall, was "Women of Power - Celebrating Breast Cancer Survival" and the designers were supposed to design and fabricate clothing that was editorial and indicative of powerful women. Here are the clothes that walked the runway in alphabetical order of designer.
Ayana designed a modern editorial take on the familiar corporate "power suit". |
Ayana's power suit was beautifully made. The stripes on the pants matched exactly, the strap going over the shoulder actually was fed through a slit at the top to allow the ruching to flex without being distorted by the suspender. The multi-layered left sleeve draping elements were framed by a long row of golden buttons, each button individually sewn on and with its own buttonhole. There was a LOT of work that went into Ayana's outfit.
Brandon sewed modern armor for the modern woman. |
As usual, Brandon's style came through clearly with strapping, unusual ties and fastenings, and multiple layers. His cropped-top turtleneck hoodie created a modern helmet with a ninja vibe. The dropped crotch pants were beautifully tailored and passed inspection with all of the judges, even though the "poopy pants" style is a bit dated. The multitude of layers in the pants was perfection. It was a great streetwear outfit, and comfortable to wear for the modern warrior woman.
Kentaro had some problems with the original top he had designed. Jazzmine ended up in a second top born from desperation. |
Kentaro originally had a cropped grey heathered stretch turtleneck hoodie designed, but when Jazzmine needed to put it on during fittings, they discovered it was too small for her body and for her hair. Although Kentaro loved the top, he decided to scrap it and design something else. The only fabric he had left to use was black, and the judges had warned him against using dark tones in his clothing. The revised top was not popular with the judges. Their commentary seemed focused on liking the design from the waist on down, but disliking the top. They also commented on the fact that Brandon's and Kentaro's designs were so similar. The designers explained that away by saying that they always discussed things between themselves, so some design overflow might have happened.
Kenya actually made one of my favorite gowns for the season with this dress for Liris. |
The judges were highly complimentary about this petal dress for Liris. The dress celebrated Liris' curvaceous figure beautifully. In fact, Heidi remarked that through the competition, this was the best celebration of Liris' figure that had been put onto the Runway. Each of the shoulder petals was individually cut out and pleated. This was a stunning dress and Liris was the perfect model for Kenya this week.
Margarita joined golden leather and red skirting into this dress which walked the thin line between fashion and costume. |
Margarita wanted her design to be a visual image for pulling the various things tearing apart the modern cancer patient back into herself. The golden corset was supposed to represent the entrapment of those tendrils and the refocusing of the woman warrior. The judges felt it was too much like costume and not well made, but Tim liked it. Part of the problem for the judges was, even though they felt the background of the design had merit, any person just seeing the dress would have no idea of that tale. True, that!
So, there was a winner and a loser, of course. Can you guess?
The winner was ... Brandon, pulling off his third win in the competition. I think Kenya gave him stiff competition this week, but her design just wasn't "editorial" enough. BS! I think Kenya should have won this week.
The loser was ... Margarita, although Kentaro was breathing down her back. BUT - Tim Gunn used his save and Margarita will remain in the workshop to design for another week.
The show ended with all five designers joining Tim for a group hug. This is a tight-knit group of competitors who, even though they all have their eyes on the prize, have friends surrounding them in the workroom. I think the friendships forged in this season of Project Runway will go far past the apartment door when it closes behind them for the final time.
What do you think? Should Tim have used his save, or should he have skipped using it this season? Did you think Margarita's design was the worst on the Runway this week? Who do you think will end up in Fashion Week alongside Brandon and Ayana - the two designers who I think have almost locked their positions down?
Enjoy your Saturday. I'll be trying to get in touch with my shed installers and find out whether they will be installing on a Saturday, or if they actually meant Monday when I spoke with them early Friday morning. Have a great weekend!
