Bookwork - It's The Part of Business That I Really Don't Like

Yesterday was a day chock full of busy, and it was a day off! I guess I can't get a break - I'm destined to be busy no matter what. But, despite the busy, it was a good day. A good swim, a successful grocery shopping day, an accomplished day with the household chores, and a lovely conversation with Aearwen to end my day before dinner and relaxing . So I really can't complain ... except ... I really had wanted to upload the new Etsy pages, and that didn't happen. I had the laptop set up from the early morning, ready to go, and it simply didn't happen. The day was filled with other tasks.

I'm a people person and I hate doing things like
reconciling bank balances and dealing with
finances and taxes. I want to sell product to
creative people and help them make wonderful
things. I'm not so great at the back-room crap.

One of the things we're working out right now is where does the money from Etsy sales appear in our accounting, how to account for the sale and the sales tax and their fees in our corporate books, and reconciling Etsy sales with our bank account statements and financial reports. That's a lot easier said than done, and it took a lot to explain it here ... so it's complicated.

For years, DH would let the bank statements pile
up and then deal with several months worth at
a time. Now that we're adding Etsy to the mix, he's
actually tackling them as soon as they arrive
in the post, so he was all "gung ho" yesterday,
and I didn't have all of the answers for him. I spent
my Etsy time finding out exactly what he needed,
but didn't get my own Etsy stuff done as a result.

That aspect of Etsy is really DH's problem - I don't deal with the books, the financial end of things, or anything similar to that. But he does, and he was tripping over an entry on our bank statements which is what led to the whole mess. So instead of uploading product, I was downloading accounting invoices and monthly summaries so that he can reconcile the books and know what we need to report at year-end for our taxes and to our accountant. Better him than me is all I've got to say about that! LOL

The whole idea of operating a business is to provide
a product to the general public and in so doing,
make a profit on that product. We're still tiptoeing
in the Etsy sales arena. I've got to get that nailed
quickly because we actually need some profit
from these sales.

I think I've corrected the one error I did have in the Etsy pages, so that the shipping will NOT be free until the purchased amount is $35 or more. Getting that set up correctly was harder than I had anticipated, and my first couple of sales got their shipping at no charge because I had messed it up. Free shipping for something over $35 isn't a problem, I'm happy to do that for the customer. But free shipping (a $8 value) is ridiculous for a $10.50 sale. So ... I'm 90% certain I've corrected my error now and will actually make a little bit of money on those smaller sales. Hopefully I can upload my new pages tomorrow on my "day off" and basically start again because that will be the key to having a great offering for my customers.

I really appreciate those of you kind enough to have
voted for this week's story. I'm in the top five, and
I'm thrilled. We'll see how next challenge goes, but
I'm still in the running here, and quite pleased that
you enjoyed my self-moving hat and happy family
tale.

On that note, I'm off to the pool. It's a beautiful day and I can't wait to greet the dawn while swimming. I hope you have a glorious day and it's my intention to return tomorrow. Enjoy, be safe, and Slava Ukraini. (BTW, since today is the final day to vote for my current story, I want to thank all of you who have been kind enough to cast a vote for me. I'm in the top 5 this week, and I'm totally thrilled.)
