Project Runway Episode 2 - Body Modification Fashion

Last night was the second episode of Project Runway Season 17 on Bravo with all new judges, a new location and a new host and a new mentor. I do have to say that I'm liking the new version. It's the usual chaos in the workroom; the usual mix of talented designers and technicians and those who are only visionary without the technical skills to pull their vision from their heads and paper into the real world of fabric and models. Their personalities are starting to emerge and the backstories of the contestants are getting filled in little-by-little. Last night was bizzare, but in a really interesting way.

The contestants were presented with a group of
five different body modification pieces in an
artistic setting. The assignment - make clothing
that is five minutes in the future fashion forward
and that will spotlight your specific body
modification. Much easier said than done.

The concept was a world where body modification was part of fashion. The designers worked in teams of three to have a cohesive collection featuring three individual looks that showcased the body mod. There were five different body modifications - chest feathers, back serrated waves, shoulder horns, a lighted necklace that I thought a bit less edgy than the rest, and an around-the-neck ruffle. Teams were randomly assigned via a new button bag.

Here's the fashion - winners and losers only. If you want to see all of the fashion, here's a link to a good blog with solid photographs of each look. There were some interesting things in this 2-day challenge, but gaps in skill certainly came to the front as well.

The winners and losers couldn't have been farther apart. What saved the winners from crashing was the skill of Sebastian. Although Tessa took over the group and directed it, it was his sewing and construction skills that saved the team and brought them to the win. Having a strong personality (Tessa) to direct the team was also crucial to their success, although a pain to live through.

Designer Afa Ah Loo from Sanoa came very
close to winning this episode. His pants were piped,
incredibly well sewn, and he did a stunning job
covering her shoes. The neck ruffle was still
allowed to be a star element.

Sebastian Grey from Columbia designed this
outstanding dress. With each bias-cut wavy panel
attached to perfectly-sewn tulle, it looked as
if each piece of the dress was suspended in air
and it moved beautifully.

Tessa Clark was last week's winner and had
immunity this week. She loved her piece. The
skirt was her concept, but she had Sebastian
cut it for her because she couldn't actually
construct the drape. Sebastian also made the
handbag for her - in two hours! So, basically,
Tessa actually constructed the top - the weakest
part of the outfit. I love that skirt and want
one!

Frankie Lewis did a quick last-minute change and
sewed together this leather sheath dress with
bolero jacket. You can barely see the chest feather
modification.

The original idea was textual differences between
the leather and this shimmery material. This
design by Kovid Kapoor was an epic fail. Once
again, the chest feathers are almost invisible.

Renee Hill chose dark colors for her fitted pant
and short 'jacket'. The feathers are
somewhat visible here, but the jacket was
designed more like a straight-jacket with no
easy way in or out. Rather torturous.

I think it's fairly evident who was on top and who on the bottom, but here's who actually won and lost. In the winning group, Sebastian won the episode with that fabulous paneled dress. Tessa was on the bottom in that group, but was still safe. In the losing group, Renee was safe and it came to a decision between Kovid and Frankie. Frankie was sent home. It was week two and she was in the bottom both times, so yes. It was the totally right decision.

Sebastian is a design powerhouse. I'm looking forward to seeing what he'll do in future weeks. There are certainly many other designers in the Workroom who won't have much left in their creative wells. I'm looking forward to the next train-wreck of an elimination in Week 3.

Have a wonderful Friday. My eyebrow tattoo from yesterday is totally fabulous and I'll see what I can do for a photo down the line here. I have a month before my next appointment so I have time before I take a pic. I'll be back tomorrow, so hang tight, be kind, and think fashion today.
