Colors In Writing - Who Knew?

Thanks to all of you chiming in on my Medicare issues and debates (internal and external). Although I don't have to make an immediate decision, it did give me some help and some hope that we'll work our way through the choices and end up with something that we both can live with. Life would be so much easier with actual dollar numbers, I guess I'll have to start lighting some fires and getting some firm numbers to work with. *Hugs* to all of you for your comments and outstretched hands.

Purple prose. Sure, description can be overdone, but it also
makes a scene. There's a line there and walking it can
be difficult at times.

One of my on-line author friends apparently has been accused of being "purple". As a negative. I must confess, as much as I adore color, I've never thought of describing an author's output by a color name before, and I was rather surprised that there was a Wiki listing for such a thing (she quoted the Wiki in her post). Hmmm - who knew.

Apparently purple prose is excessively ornate, flowery or florid. All I know is that I enjoy her books and love her descriptions. I guess that makes me a purple fan - at least for her specific writing style.

The term "Yellow Journalism" first came into play in feuds
between Hearst and Pulitzer. It seems to continue today
in the aisles of any grocery store or the front pages
of almost any general magazine. Gossip is popular, but
usually not very factual.

Of course I've heard of yellow journalism - the accusation given to newspapers and/or articles that use eye-catching headlines followed by columns of little to no information. Hmmm ... that sounds a bit like most politicians I have listened to over the past few decades. I'm sure politicians have their own colors of shame, though.

Vulgar or blue language has its' place in writing and in
life, but it shouldn't be the backbone of each
paragraph or the entire book. I guess I tend to be
a bit blue in my daily language now and again, but
I do try to keep my language professional in
the shop and in my writings.

I tried looking up other colors - it's not easy to pin things down, but I did find entries for blue language. Apparently blue language is profane or vulgar language. I've certainly known people and authors guilty of using blue language, but it's probably best thought of as a spice - using too much of it ruins the broth.

Of course, anything overused will leave a poor taste, and that goes for books (and blogs) as well as for stews and for art. On that note, I think I'll call this blog finished for the day and start my very busy day off with a nice solid swim. I hope each of you has a wonderful Wednesday and I'll return tomorrow with more off-the-wall and spur-of-the-moment thoughts and ramblings for you. LOL
