Water, Water, Everywhere.....

We have had drainage problems in our upper back yard for many years. We have flooded through the windows and foundation walls of that side also, many times. On Saturday I got home from work to find an ocean in my back yard. OK, that's probably inaccurate - let's call it a rather dirty, fresh-water lake instead of an ocean. We weren't flooding, but due to the diligent actions of a mole alongside my foundation, we were getting trickle water through into the house. For the majority of the rest of Saturday we pushed and bailed water out. My DH got up every three hours throughout the night to check on the foundation leak. Then, on Sunday, the lake grew again and we found another mole hole to plug up.

Our major problem is the fact that the ground is still frozen solid. On top of that, we have up to two inches of ice. The ice is melting in our nice warm temps of the last few days, and ice melts from the bottom up as well as the top surface. So we have a wonderful opportunity to stress out over our lake for the next few days as this ice field melts. Unfortunately, we actually have to be at our jobs today. So the question will be - will the house still be unflooded when we arrive back home tonight?

I will admit that I did take a little time to admire the beauty of the ice that I was hoping would melt quickly. Looking through the water tinted darkly from the tannin of the autumn's leaves, the ice visible below with small pocks of bubbles sprinkling its' surface like diamonds. And a bit of sunshine glow making the entire mini-world glow. It was truly beautiful. If I had seen this in any other circumstance instead of trying to protect my home, I would have been simply entranced.
